The United States government has reiterated its dedication to supporting the Ugandan government in the fight against HIV/AIDS. US Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. William Popp, emphasized the importance of HIV/AIDS testing and knowing one’s status during his visit to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital. He stressed the support provided by the US government through the PEPFAR program and urged individuals on treatment to adhere to their medication as prescribed by healthcare professionals.

Mr. Popp highlighted the impact of early detection and treatment, noting that individuals who test positive for HIV/AIDS and undergo treatment experience suppressed viral loads, reducing the likelihood of transmitting the virus to others. The US government’s assistance to Uganda totals $1 billion, with $550 million specifically allocated to health programs. A significant portion of this funding is dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, as well as the fight against malaria, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases.

His visit to Fort Portal was aimed at assessing the initiatives implemented by the US government through organizations such as the Center for Disease Control, the Department of Defense, and the PEPFAR program. Mr. Popp mentioned the investment of over $20 million in the construction of an isolation ward at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, which has been crucial in treating Ebola patients and addressing other epidemics over the years.

Dr. Okello Stephen, a healthcare provider at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, expressed gratitude for the support from the US government, which led to the establishment of a six-bed Ebola treatment unit in 2016. The facility has since been utilized for various medical studies and the management of diseases such as Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever, Covid-19, and Ebola, showcasing its versatility and importance in epidemic control.

Dr. Alex Adaku, the hospital director, highlighted the provision of HIV/AIDS services in collaboration with partners supported by the US government. He mentioned the enhancement of laboratory infrastructure at the facility to bolster response capabilities during outbreaks and emergencies, particularly in a region prone to health crises.

Medical records at the hospital revealed that Fort Portal City has approximately 20,848 HIV/AIDS patients, with a majority being women. The availability of HIV/AIDS services at lower facilities ensures broader access to care and treatment for individuals in need. The hospital’s comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery, supported by the US government, aims to address health challenges and promote wellbeing in the community.

In conclusion, the ongoing partnership between the United States government and Uganda in combatting HIV/AIDS underscores a shared commitment to public health and disease prevention. Through collaborative efforts and strategic investments, significant progress can be made in advancing healthcare services and improving outcomes for individuals affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
