The Revitalized Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC) has raised concerns about the slow progress in the implementation of critical tasks as the extended transitional period in South Sudan nears its end. In a statement released on March 21, 2024, R-JMEC highlighted the urgent need for dialogue to address the current situation in the country.

The peace monitoring body pointed out that important bodies such as the Political Parties Council (PPC), National Elections Commission (NEC), and National Constitutional Review Commission (NCRC) are still unfunded, with no clear timelines on how to move forward. With national elections scheduled to take place in December 2024, South Sudan requires clarity from the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) on how it plans to expedite the pending tasks to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

According to R-JMEC, engagements with key stakeholders and institutions involved in the September 2018 peace agreement have highlighted the need for clear political guidance from the executive of the RTGoNU and the agreement parties. The statement from R-JMEC emphasized the importance of urgent dialogue among the parties to the peace agreement to address the current political situation.

The peace monitoring body stressed the necessity for open and constructive dialogue among the parties, emphasizing the importance of collegiality and consensus in finding a way forward. It has also communicated with the RTGoNU, emphasizing the importance of inter-party consultations and constructive dialogue to establish a viable path forward within the framework of the peace agreement.

Despite the delays in implementation, R-JMEC believes that significant progress can still be made in the coming months by focusing on key tasks outlined in the peace agreement. This would demonstrate the political goodwill necessary to move forward while engaging in dialogue to resolve the current challenges.

In conclusion, R-JMEC called for urgent dialogue among the parties to the peace agreement to address the critical issues facing South Sudan as the country approaches the end of the transitional period. By working together collaboratively and engaging in constructive dialogue, there is a possibility of making important strides towards achieving peace and stability in the country.
