On Sunday, April 14, 2024, the populations of Lèro and Tombany erected barricades at various access points of the Dinguiraye mining company. The young protestors accuse the company of not keeping the promises it made.

Oumar Doumbouya, one of the young protestors, explains the reasons for their protest: “For a long time, this mining company in Dinguiraye made a lot of promises before starting the underground mine exploitation and it (SMD) has not been able to keep its commitments, that’s why this morning, we came out to denounce this lack of willingness of the company while demanding the rights of our communities,” he said.

The protestors also accuse the SMD of causing harmful damage to the environment.

“The Lèro of yesterday and today, there is a very big difference. Women used well water for cooking and drinking. But today, the environment is polluted by the harmful damages caused by this company. Even the wells they dug practically have no water now. They have destroyed everything in Lèro, without helping us. We demand 24/7 electricity, water supply, and roads for our communities,” he adds.

According to our information, this is the first time that an underground mine has been created by a mining company in Guinea.

It should be noted that the Dinguiraye mining company has already exploited more than 10 to 20 meters in this underground mine that it has just started.
