The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) revealed on Monday that a group of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militias had entered the country with the intention of carrying out terror attacks. The group, led by ADF commander Ahmed Muhammod Hassan, also known as Abu Waqas, a Tanzanian-born bomb expert, infiltrated the country about two days prior to the announcement.

According to Deputy Defence spokesperson Col Deo Akiki, the group includes individuals such as Muhammed Issa, Amigo Kibirige (aka Simba), Muhamad Lumisa, and Nasser Hamid Diiru. One of them is suspected to have been sent by Abu Waqas for the current mission. The UPDF has alerted other security agencies and is on high alert for any potential attacks.

Col Deo Akiki emphasized the danger posed by the terrorists attempting to carry out attacks in Uganda, stating that the ADF had faced significant losses in the Kamanda area within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). ADF militants have resorted to targeting civilians in response to their losses at the hands of joint operations between Ugandan forces and the DRC’s Armed Forces (FARDC).

He mentioned the successful operations that resulted in the death of the ADF commander Kamusi and the capture of his second-in-command, Njovu, who is currently facing trial. The group has been significantly weakened, with remaining elements scattered into the jungles of the DRC. The ADF pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in 2019, and ISIL has claimed responsibility for some of the ADF’s previous attacks.

In response to the threat posed by the ADF, Uganda launched a ground and air campaign against the group in the DR Congo in 2021. President Museveni has highlighted the success of the operation in eliminating a large number of rebels, including key commanders. The ongoing efforts aim to root out the ADF and safeguard the security and stability of the region.

In conclusion, the UPDF remains vigilant in monitoring and responding to any potential security threats posed by groups like the ADF. The collaboration between Ugandan and international security forces is crucial in combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of the population. The recent infiltration of ADF militias serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges posed by terrorism and the importance of maintaining robust security measures to prevent attacks and protect innocent lives.
