The Dokolo District Woman parliamentary by-election in Uganda recently concluded with the Electoral Commission declaring Sarah Aguti Nyangkori of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party as the winner. The by-election was held to fill the seat that became vacant due to the death of Cecilia Atim Ogwal on January 18. The election took place on March 21, and Sarah Aguti emerged victorious by winning in all 11 sub-counties and three town councils in the district.

The contenders for the Woman MP seat included Dr. Austin Rosemary Alwoc of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, Harriet Ageno of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Janet Rose Adongo Elau Okello of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, as well as independent candidates Dr. Esther Akullo Obot Otada and Rebecca Arao.

In terms of results, Sarah Aguti Nyangkori garnered 23,044 votes, followed by Adongo Elau from the NRM party with 14,001 votes. Dr. Alwoc secured the third position with 8,168 votes. The total number of valid votes cast was 47,159, with 988 rejected or invalid ballot papers. The total number of counted ballot papers was 48,157, with 49 spoiled ballot papers.

The returning officer for Dokolo District, Mr. Steven Ngobi, declared Sarah Aguti Nyangkori as the winner in accordance with the Parliamentary Elections Act. The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, praised the peaceful and credible nature of the by-election and commended all the candidates, political parties, supporters, and law enforcement agencies for their participation.

Sarah Aguti’s journey to the August House began after she was declared the official flag bearer for UPC following a party district conference. Both Maxwell Akora and Jimmy Akena Obote expressed confidence in Aguti’s victory, with Akora predicting a win by over 60%.

Dr. Alwoc faced challenges due to her time spent living in the United Kingdom, but supporters believed she understood her late mother’s constituency. Concerns about her not being born or married in Dokolo were dismissed by her family, who emphasized the importance of her ability to serve the people effectively.

In an interview, Dr. Alwoc highlighted her commitment to continuing her late mother’s legacy of inclusion and support for all individuals, regardless of their background. She emphasized the importance of focusing on what one can do to benefit the country rather than where they were born or married.

Overall, the Dokolo District Woman parliamentary by-election was a significant democratic process that showcased the engagement of various parties and candidates, ultimately resulting in Sarah Aguti Nyangkori’s victory and her journey to represent the district in Parliament.
