Destiny Chilemanya shone brightly as the University of Benin Cricket Club emerged victorious over defending champions, No Limit CC, by a commanding 70 runs in the final match of the Edo State Cricket League. The thrilling game showcased emerging talents in the sport, much to the delight of cricket enthusiasts who applauded the state’s efforts in promoting cricket development through the school system. The UNIBEN team boasted former national U-19 stars such as Reigneth Osagie, Miracle Akhigbe, and Okeke Izuchukwu. National team players Peter Aho and Eghosa Aghedo also featured in the lineup, with Aghedo leading as captain. The team also included Nigeria’s female bowling sensation, Peculiar Agboya, but it was Chilemanya who stole the show with a stellar performance in the championship-clinching match.
The first innings saw No Limit’s Chiemelie Udekwe, a national team fast bowler, team up with Godbless Abilo to dismantle the UNIBEN batting order, both taking three wickets each. In under 20 overs, the UNIBEN team was all out for 114 runs. Despite the seemingly challenging score, the defending champions were soon to realize the uphill battle awaiting them in the second innings. Led by Eghosa, the UNIBEN team swiftly wrapped up the match in just 12.1 overs, restricting No Limit to a mere 44 runs and dashing their hopes of a title defense. Chilemanya, who contributed 16 runs to UNIBEN’s total, was rightly named the player of the match. Osagie added 27 runs off 25 balls, while Aho contributed 22 runs off 32 balls, further solidifying UNIBEN’s dominance on the field.
Speaking after the game, Abraham Oviawe, Vice Chairman of the Edo State Cricket League, commended the emergence of new talent, emphasizing that the success of the league lies in nurturing local players who are actively engaged in their education. Following the conclusion of the Super Four series, Chiemelie Udekwe was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his outstanding performances for No Limit CC, while David Abiebhode of Invictus CC received the batter of the series award. Chilemanya deservedly clinched the Bowler of the series title, with Osward Obasohan of UNIBEN CC being recognized as the fielder of the series.
