UMG recently announced that negotiations for a new license with TikTok have failed due to various issues related to fair compensation for artists and songwriters, protection from the potential adverse effects of AI on human artists, and online safety. Despite the platform boasting 1 billion global monthly active users and strategic partnerships with companies like Warner Music Group and Boomplay, UMG believes that TikTok is not meeting the necessary criteria in these key areas.
In response, UMG released an open letter to the artist and songwriter community, emphasizing their commitment to supporting artists and songwriters in achieving their creative and commercial potential. The letter also highlighted UMG’s efforts to update streaming’s remuneration model, which has been positively received by various partners.
UMG criticized TikTok for proposing payment rates significantly lower than those of similar major social platforms, despite its substantial user base and rising advertising revenue. The letter accused TikTok of attempting to build a music-based business without fairly compensating artists.
UMG also expressed concern about TikTok’s acceptance and promotion of AI-generated recordings, which could potentially dilute the royalty pool for human artists. Additionally, UMG raised issues about TikTok’s inadequate handling of infringing content and lack of solutions for issues like hate speech and harassment.
According to UMG, TikTok responded to their proposals with indifference and intimidation, allegedly attempting to pressure UMG into accepting a deal undervaluing music. TikTok, in response, accused UMG of prioritizing their own greed over the welfare of their artists and songwriters.
The dispute between UMG and TikTok showcases the ongoing tension between music rights holders and digital platforms over fair compensation for artists and songwriters. It remains to be seen whether the two parties will be able to reach a resolution in the future.
