As the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches, a group of 16 students from the war-torn country found solace in a trip to Kenya. The young tourists, ranging from nine to 25 years old, experienced a peaceful atmosphere about 6,000 km away from their home country. The trip offered them a chance to momentarily escape the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and enjoy some respite.

The Ukrainian nationals arrived in Kenya on January 24 and embarked on a breathtaking journey through Naivasha, Mombasa, Voi, Diani, and Nairobi. Their journey culminated in Lake Nakuru National Park, where they embraced the natural beauty of Kenya and reflected on their experiences amidst the war in their homeland. As the Ukrainian national anthem echoed through the park, the young tourists planted tree seedlings, leaving a symbolic mark of their visit to Kenya.

The visitors also engaged in an early morning game drive through the diverse landscapes of Lake Nakuru National Park. Visibly happy and at peace, they celebrated the ecological richness and scenic beauty that surrounded them. The students then gathered at Lake Nakuru Lodge, where they sang their national anthem and planted tree seedlings as a gesture of solidarity and peace.

Throughout their trip, the Ukrainian nationals found a sense of healing and tranquility in Kenya. Valery Topoleva, a student from Odesa City, expressed the significance of seeking peace in Kenya, stating that it provided a respite from the turmoil caused by the invasion of their country. The students sang and danced, soaking in the spectacular view of Lake Nakuru Lodge, reveling in the peaceful atmosphere.

The Consul of Ukraine in Mombasa, Oleksii Sierkov, emphasized the therapeutic value of the trip for the children and students who have been affected by the trauma of war. He commended Kenya for providing a peaceful environment that contributes to the mental healing of the young visitors. Sierkov highlighted the role of the Kenyan government, hoteliers, and service providers in supporting and complementing the stay of the Ukrainian tourists.

Joseph Muya, the Marketing Director of Lake Nakuru Lodge, expressed the lodge’s commitment to offering hope and support to the visiting students. He affirmed that the lodge aimed to be a source of comfort to families affected by war, recognizing that the hospitality extended to the students would leave a lasting impact on their perception of Kenya.

In conclusion, the Ukrainian students’ visit to Kenya provided a much-needed escape from the strife in their home country. The trip offered a healing experience, allowing them to find respite and joy amidst the natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere of Kenya. As they return to Ukraine, the memories of their time in Kenya will serve as a reminder of the tranquility and warmth they experienced amid challenging times.
