… it lacks the unique flavors and complexity that specialty coffee offers. For Mukhone and BKC, their focus has always been on producing specialty coffee, as they believe in providing consumers with a high-quality coffee experience.
However, the journey towards establishing BKC was not without its challenges. Beginning his foray into the coffee industry in 2019, Mukhone initially faced setbacks, including unreliable suppliers and the risk of being scammed when trying to acquire land for coffee farming. The Covid-19 pandemic presented an unexpected opportunity for Mukhone to delve deeper into the coffee industry, and he chose to explore his passion for coffee during the lockdown.
Despite the difficult terrain and environmental challenges in the Elgon sub-region, Mukhone was determined to set up a washing station for Arabica coffee. The successful establishment of the washing station not only allowed BKC to produce high-quality coffee but also benefitted the local community by providing free clean water to residents.
Mukhone’s dedication to producing quality coffee has paid off, as BKC was recognized as one of Uganda’s model coffee projects by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority. Their commitment to consistently producing top-quality coffee has earned them a reputation for excellence in the industry.
The focus on quality over quantity has been a driving force for Mukhone, as he emphasizes the importance of specialty coffee in the Uganda coffee experience. By prioritizing rigorous quality control measures and meticulous production processes, BKC has positioned itself as a leading producer of specialty coffee in the region.
Mukhone’s dedication to the coffee industry extends beyond his business success, as he is also committed to supporting smallholder farmers and impacting local communities. By working closely with coffee farmers and ensuring fair prices for their produce, BKC aims to contribute to the long-term economic security of the communities in which they operate.
Additionally, the employment opportunities created by BKC, both directly and indirectly, have had a positive impact on the local economy. By empowering workers and providing a source of livelihood for many individuals, BKC has become an integral part of the community.
Mukhone’s journey in the coffee industry serves as a testament to the resilience and determination required to succeed in a challenging business environment. Despite facing obstacles and setbacks, his unwavering commitment to producing high-quality coffee has allowed BKC to carve out a niche in the industry and make a positive impact on the communities they serve.
As the Uganda coffee industry continues to grapple with challenges and scandals, individual players like Bernard Mukhone and BKC are shining examples of how dedication, integrity, and a focus on quality can lead to success and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. It is through their efforts that the future of the Uganda coffee industry holds promise and potential for growth and positive change.
