The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, recently delivered a powerful message to military commanders emphasizing the importance of not getting too comfortable in their positions. He stressed that holding a certain office should be viewed as a temporary opportunity, with the understanding that one may be reassigned at any time for the greater operational efficiency of the forces.

During the handover ceremony at Mbuya army headquarters, where former Deputy CDF Lt Gen Peter Elwelu passed on his duties to Lt Gen Sam Okiding, Gen Muhoozi reiterated that serving in a particular office is only a temporary assignment that all military officers must pass through in their career development. He emphasized that this “tour of duty” is meant to enhance the overall professionalism of the armed forces.

Acknowledging the significance of the occasion, Gen Muhoozi expressed gratitude to the appointing authority, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for selecting the right individuals to occupy these important positions. He also encouraged the incoming officers to make a positive impact in their new roles while appreciating the outgoing officers for their dedicated service.

The recent appointments within the UPDF saw Gen Muhoozi taking on the role of CDF, succeeding Gen Wilson Mbadi who was appointed as Minister of State for Trade. Additionally, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, who previously commanded the African Union Transmission Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), assumed the position of Deputy CDF, while Maj Gen Sam Kavuma was promoted to Lt Gen and appointed as the new ATMIS commander.

In his remarks, Gen Muhoozi emphasized the importance of leaving a lasting and positive legacy in all aspects of service within the military. He urged all UPDF officers to do their best and contribute to the peaceful and professional culture of the armed forces.

Former Deputy CDF Lt Gen Peter Elwelu expressed appreciation for the trust placed in him during his tenure and pledged to continue serving in a different capacity as a Special Presidential Advisor. Similarly, Gen Mbadi, who had served alongside Elwelu from June 2021 to March 2024, highlighted the need for expedited court procedures within the military and improved welfare for soldiers to retire with dignity.

The newly appointed Deputy CDF, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, commended Gen Elwelu for his dedicated service and expressed his commitment to serving to the best of his ability. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving shared goals within the military.

Overall, Gen Muhoozi’s message serves as a reminder to all military personnel that their service in a particular office is temporary and should be used as an opportunity to positively impact the forces. By maintaining a spirit of unity, professionalism, and dedication, officers can contribute to the overall success and effectiveness of the UPDF.
