Uganda unprepared for next global shock, economists warn

The Uganda shilling hit Shs 3,730 to the dollar in March, its weakest in nearly two years, pump prices crossed Shs 6,000, transport fares followed, and so did food prices.

The trigger was a conflict Uganda had no part in: the US-Israel-Iran war, and yet the damage was felt many miles away.

According to economists speaking at a Uganda Development Bank webinar, the deeper problem is not the conflict itself; it is that Uganda still lacks the systems to see these shocks coming and absorb them.
