The Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Vincent Ssempijja, recently visited Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Somalia to inspect their operations and commend their efforts in contributing to the stability and development of the country. As Commander of UPDF’s Sector One in Somalia, Brig Gen Anthony Mbuusi Lukwago highlighted the role of the UPDF in creating a conducive atmosphere for political processes and ensuring the functionality of the government of Mogadishu.

One of the major achievements of the UPDF in Somalia has been the securing of Somalia’s airspace, which had previously been hampered by al-Shabaab attacks on airports. This has led to a significant increase in airport operations, with over 8,533 international flights, 18,166 domestic flights, and 1,686 mission flights being accommodated annually. The improvement in infrastructure and social services in Somalia is attributed to the persistent provision of security by the UPDF.

During the visit, Minister Ssempijja commended the UPDF soldiers serving as part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) for their role in creating a conducive environment for Somalia’s socio-economic and political transformation. He praised the soldiers for exhibiting the Pan-African spirit and acknowledged their professionalism and discipline, which has earned UPDF international accolades.

UPDF deployed to Somalia in 2007 under the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which was funded by the UN Security Council. However, two years ago, some UN Security Council member countries suggested that UPDF and AMISOM forces had outlived their purpose in Somalia. Despite this, ATMIS was established to continue training Somali forces and maintaining security in the country.

Minister Ssempijja recognized the rapid growth of Mogadishu city, seaport, and Aden Abdulle international airport traffic as evidence of the UPDF’s hard work and professionalism. He also commended President Yoweri Museveni for his vision and strategic leadership in the fight against al-Shabaab in Somalia, which has helped protect Uganda from potential attacks.

Overall, the visit highlighted the significant contributions of the UPDF in Somalia and the positive impact they have had on the country’s security and development. The dedication and professionalism of the soldiers have been instrumental in creating a stable environment for political and socio-economic progress in Somalia. Minister Ssempijja’s visit served as an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work of the UPDF forces in Somalia and their commitment to peacekeeping efforts in the region.
