Uganda is gearing up to host the upcoming African Water and Sanitation Association International Congress and Exhibition (Afwasa ICE2025) in February 2025, following the successful hosting of two major international conferences earlier this year. The country secured the rights to host Afwasa ICE2025 after the African Water Association (AfWA) granted Uganda’s National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) the opportunity.

The event is scheduled to take place from February 16-20, and preparations have already begun to ensure its success. The early preparations are aimed at maximizing the impact of the conference, which is expected to bring together experts, practitioners, and stakeholders in the water and sanitation sector.

At the launch function held on March 26 at the NWSC Resource Center in Bugolobi, Sam Cheptoris, the minister of water and environment, emphasized the importance of hosting the Afwasa conference. He highlighted Uganda’s challenges in meeting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Six, which aims to provide clean water and sanitation for all by 2030. Cheptoris believes that the conference will create a platform for sharing knowledge, experiences, and breakthroughs to accelerate progress towards meeting the SDG Six target.

Dr. Silver Mugisha, the managing director of NWSC, anticipates more than 2,000 delegates to attend the event. He sees this as not only an opportunity for learning and benchmarking but also a chance to boost the country’s tourism and service sectors. Additionally, AfWA will inaugurate the African Water Academy during the congress, establishing it as a model institute for water innovations in Africa.

Uganda has previously hosted the AfWA conferences in 2010 and 2020, with the 2020 event attracting 1500 delegates before the Covid-19 lockdown in March. The conferences have provided a platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and showcasing innovations in the water and sanitation sector. The 2025 edition of Afwasa ICE is expected to build on the success of previous conferences and further contribute to advancing the water and sanitation agenda in Africa.

In conclusion, Uganda is preparing to host the Afwasa ICE2025 to facilitate global discussions on water and sanitation challenges. The conference will bring together stakeholders to share insights, experiences, and innovations that can accelerate progress towards achieving SDG Six by 2030. With early preparations underway, Uganda is poised to showcase its commitment to sustainable development in the water and sanitation sector and set the stage for a successful and impactful event in February 2025.
