The government has initiated major construction works for the Busega-Mpigi expressway, resulting in the diversion of traffic on a section of the Kampala-Masaka highway. Unra spokesperson, Mr Allan Ssempebwa, stated that the diversion was communicated earlier to allow contractors to begin full-scale construction works. Notices were put up to inform road users, and caution is urged in and around Mpigi town to prevent accidents. The construction is expected to take about 8 months.

To manage the traffic diversion, road users heading to Masaka will be redirected at Mpigi town roundabout and will rejoin Masaka Highway at Kalagala. Similarly, motorists heading to Kampala will follow the same redirection route.

The 23.7km expressway project is being undertaken by a consortium of Chinese companies, including the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the China Railway 19th Bureau Group Company Limited. The government aims to mitigate the traffic congestion on the Kampala-Masaka highway, particularly on the road sections between Busega and Nsangi, among other areas.

Similar to the Entebbe Expressway, the Busega-Mpigi Expressway will be tolled, with motorists expected to pay a fee based on the size of their respective vehicles.

The construction works mark a significant development in the infrastructure of the area, promising to improve traffic flow and create better travel experiences for road users. With careful planning and informed redirection, the government seeks to minimize disruptions while advancing the progress of the Busega-Mpigi expressway project.
