The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament, Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, has provided an update on the health condition of Kawempe North legislator, Muhammad Ssegirinya. He assured the country that Ssegirinya is on the right path to recovery at the Agha-Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he has been hospitalized for close to two months.

On Thursday, Mr Ssenyonyi, along with the opposition chief whip, Mr John Baptist Nambeshe, flew to Kenya to ascertain the legislator’s health condition. In an interview on Friday, Mr Ssenyonyi dismissed social media reports alleging that Ssegirinya’s health has continued to deteriorate.

“The honorable Ssegirinya belongs to the opposition, and this is why the opposition chief whip and I chose to come and ascertain the condition in which he is because too many people keep saying too many things,” Mr Ssenyonyi said.

Mr Ssenyonyi also emphasized that he will give a report to Parliament about the state of their colleague and will share his improvement and all the necessary steps that should be taken, as Parliament is taking care of all medical support.

The LoP applauded the family members, especially the legislator’s mother, Ms. Justine Nakajumba, for providing all the necessary support to her embattled son. He also expressed optimism about Ssegirinya’s recovery, saying, “Ssegirinya will recover, the doctors are playing their part, but most importantly, we are praying that the Lord heals our colleague.”

Ms. Nakujumba urged the public, especially social media users, to avoid pronouncing her son dead, as such false announcements upset his supporters and relatives. She assured everyone that Ssegirinya will be fine and will soon return to his constituency duties, urging Ugandans to stop spreading false death rumors and to pray for him.

Mr. Nambeshe commended the doctors for working tirelessly to save Ssegirinya’s life and urged the Ugandan government to invest more in improving health facilities to reduce the need for medical tours.

Before being flown to Kenya, Ssengirinya was receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital and had also sought medication in Germany and the Netherlands between June and October last year. Since his release from Luzira prison, where he spent more than a year on allegations of being behind a spate of machete killings in greater Masaka, Ssegirinya’s health has continued to deteriorate. Medical reports indicated that the MP had lung problems and skin-related infections.

In conclusion, the opposition members’ visit to Kenya to check on Ssegirinya’s health signifies the importance of unity and support for a colleague in need. Their efforts, along with the family’s and medical professionals’ dedication, reflect a collective desire for the legislator’s recovery. It is evident that the ongoing challenges facing Ssegirinya’s health have sparked a call for improved healthcare infrastructure in Uganda, highlighting the need for long-term investments in medical facilities to prevent the necessity of medical tours. The emphasis on accurate information and positive support from the public further underlines the importance of genuine concern and care for individuals in times of distress.
