US-based Ugandan human rights activist, Hillary Innocent Taylor Seguya, has been announced as the winner of the 2024 David Kato Vision and Voice Award (DKK). The award, given annually since 2012, recognizes the life and work of David Kato, a prominent human rights advocate who was tragically murdered in 2011. It aims to honor individuals who demonstrate leadership in advocating for the sexual rights of LGBTQ+ people.

The award ceremony took place at the Protea Hotel and was attended by legislators Moses Kabuusu and Micheal Kakembo, as well as members of civil society, the legal fraternity, and the diplomatic community. Seguya, who is currently based in the United States, expressed his humility upon receiving the award. He emphasized the significance of David Kato’s legacy, stating that the award symbolizes resistance against oppression and serves as a beacon of hope for those fighting for fundamental human rights.

Dr. Frank Mugisha, the chairperson of the DKK Memorial Lecture Committee, highlighted the importance of addressing the impact of trauma on the mental health of the sexual minorities community. He called for new approaches to counter vitriol and hate towards the LGBTQ+ community, emphasizing the need to challenge pervasive false narratives, particularly during moments of crisis.

During the event, Francis Harimwomugasho, a minority rights advocate, underscored the obligation of lawyers to provide legal support to marginalized and downtrodden individuals. The award has previously been granted to individuals such as Maurice Tomlinson from Jamaica, Martha Tholanah from Zimbabwe, Ali Erol from Turkey, and Cambodian transgender activist Sou Sotheavy.

The recognition of Hillary Innocent Taylor Seguya’s dedication to human rights and LGBTQ+ advocacy exemplifies the ongoing commitment to advancing equality and justice for marginalized communities. The award serves as a testament to the resilience of individuals and organizations striving to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
