The lawyer alleged to have shot and killed an unarmed private security guard at a rugby club in Wakiso District has been released by the police as the case takes a new turn. Mr Sam Ahamya is accused of shooting Nekeon Buruga while taking safety precautions with his privately owned pistol at Kings Park Rugby Club in Kakajjo Zone, Bweyogerere Division, Kira Municipality, two weeks ago.
According to a police source, Mr Ahamya was given a police bond after the relatives of the deceased provided additional statements defending the suspect. These statements led to the release of the alleged shooter.
Efforts to obtain an update about the case from the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango, have been unsuccessful, as he has not responded to requests for information regarding the case. On the day of the incident, Mr Ahamya went to watch the finals of the Uganda Cup, during which he handed over his pistol at the entrance and then retrieved it at the end of the match.
He told detectives that when he retrieved the pistol, he was unaware that its magazine had been inserted, and thinking the pistol was empty, he tried to take safety precautions. However, when he pulled the trigger to confirm that no bullet was in the chamber, the pistol discharged a bullet and accidentally injured the guard.
The killer gun was recovered before Mr Ahamya was arrested on murder charges. Contradicting accounts of what happened have emerged since the incident. A witness reported that the guard blocked the suspect from entering the club with the pistol, leading to a scuffle during which the suspect shot the guard. However, police officers on the ground were given a different account of the events.
The police have decided to submit the case file to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to determine whether to charge the suspect with the guard’s death or to treat the case as a mistake. The case has taken a new twist with the release of the alleged shooter and the conflicting statements and accounts of the events. The involvement of the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions indicates that the case is not yet resolved and will require further investigation and legal proceedings.
