In an exclusive interview with The Observer, Joel Ssenyonyi, the leader of the opposition in parliament, reiterated his firm dedication to holding high-ranking officials, including the Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among, accountable for their actions. Despite recognizing the challenging nature of the fight against corruption and the misuse of public resources, Ssenyonyi expressed his unwavering commitment to pursuing accountability.

The spotlight has recently been thrust upon Parliament by a coalition of voices, including the digital public square, Agora Discourse, Makerere University lecturer Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, and journalist and lawyer Agatha Atuhaire. These activists have utilized various platforms, including micro-blogging services and social networks, to launch a public campaign aimed at demanding accountability from Parliament for what they perceive as wasteful expenditure of public funds. The interview with Muhammad Muwonge shed light on these efforts.

Ssenyonyi’s ultimatums to the Speaker to address corruption allegations raised in an ongoing parliamentary exhibition are part of a broader goal to ensure transparency and accountability. He emphasized the importance of the Speaker providing satisfactory explanations, which would be carefully reviewed to determine the appropriate course of action. Legal avenues are being considered to ensure that the voices of the Ugandan people demanding accountability are effectively heard and addressed.

The opposition’s approach to accountability in Parliament is distinct from past actions taken in similar situations. While there have been demands for responses, the focus is on taking decisive action rather than making empty promises. The goal is to hold public officials accountable for their actions and ensure that the demands of the people are met.

Regarding the handling of issues involving Mathias Mpuuga and the Speaker, Ssenyonyi explained the differences in approach. While Mpuuga’s case involved internal party discipline and accountability, the Speaker’s accountability is a matter of public concern and transparency. The opposition’s actions aim to demand answers and ensure that public officials are held accountable for their actions.

The potential repercussions of pushing for the Speaker to step down or be censured are acknowledged, but Ssenyonyi remains steadfast in his commitment to accountability. Despite potential divisions within the party, the importance of raising necessary questions and demanding answers outweighs concerns about internal disagreements.

Ssenyonyi’s unwavering determination to pursue accountability, even if it leads to dissent within the party, reflects his commitment to doing what is right for the people of Uganda. He is prepared to stand alone if necessary to fulfill his duty to the public and ensure that public officials are held accountable for their actions. Ultimately, the pursuit of accountability remains a top priority for Ssenyonyi and the opposition in Parliament.
