Police detectives in Tororo District, eastern Uganda are currently investigating a tragic incident in which one police officer shot and killed his senior colleague following a disagreement at a drinking joint. The incident took place in Petta Sub County, Tororo District on January 31st at around 9pm, and it has sent shockwaves throughout the community.
According to Bukedi South Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Moses Mugwe, the two officers involved in the shooting were Inspector of Police (IP) Moses Okwele and Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) William Ochom. The altercation began over a barmaid at the drinking joint and escalated into a deadly confrontation.
Both officers had been deployed at Petta Police post before the shooting occurred. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that after the disagreement, IP Okwele left the bar but returned armed with an SMG rifle a few minutes later. Tragically, he shot and injured AIP Ochom, who returned fire and killed Okwele instantly.
As a result, IP Okwele succumbed to bullet wounds in the stomach, and AIP Ochom was rushed to Tororo General Hospital to receive treatment for his injured legs. Plans were underway to evacuate AIP Ochom to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for further care, while the body of IP Okwele remained in the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Mr Mugwe expressed deep regret over the loss of the officer and emphasized the urgency in conducting a thorough investigation to understand the motive and events leading up to the shooting. He expressed hope that AIP Ochom would survive and be able to provide important information about the circumstances of the tragic incident.
Following the shooting, the killed officer’s body was discovered in a pool of blood at the scene, prompting a swift response from law enforcement authorities. The community has been left in shock and disbelief over the violent clash between two members of the police force.
The investigation into this deeply troubling incident is ongoing, and authorities are committed to uncovering the truth about what transpired. The loss of life in such circumstances is a devastating blow to the entire community, and the police force is determined to ensure that the incident is thoroughly investigated with diligence and sensitivity.
