NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg is visiting Washington to advocate for continued US military funding for Ukraine, arguing that it sends a crucial deterrent message to China. Despite the significant amount of aid the US has already provided to Ukraine since the Russian invasion nearly two years ago, some Republican lawmakers have become hesitant to further support Kiev, questioning its lack of a clear end game in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
President Joe Biden has requested $61 billion in new aid for Ukraine from Congress, but negotiations have stalled as Republican lawmakers demand changes in US immigration and border control policy in exchange for approving more funding for Ukraine.
Stoltenberg is emphasizing the importance of continued aid to Ukraine, particularly in light of China’s close attention to the situation. He stressed that if Ukraine were to be abandoned by the US and its allies, China might be emboldened to take aggressive military action to seize control of Taiwan. Additionally, he warned that a weakened Ukraine would not only make Europe more vulnerable, but also leave the United States susceptible to potential threats if Putin achieves his objectives in Ukraine.
Stoltenberg also highlighted the economic benefit for the United States, as US aid to Ukraine is used to purchase weapons made in America. He plans to make his case for ongoing aid to Ukraine during meetings with top US officials and lawmakers during his visit to Washington.
The NATO chief’s visit comes at a critical juncture as Congress debates the future of US aid to Ukraine and as China closely observes the level of Western support for Ukraine. Despite political challenges and internal debate within Congress, Stoltenberg is advocating for a continued commitment to supporting Ukraine, citing its importance in deterring aggressive actions by both Russia and China.
