President Yoweri Museveni has expressed his appreciation for the organizing committee of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+ China summits for successfully pulling off colorful summits, amidst challenges and strict deadlines. The committee was led by Ms. Lucy Nakyobe Mbonye, the head of Public Service Commission and Secretary to Cabinet, and Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
President Museveni commended the committee’s efforts during a luncheon at State House, Entebbe on January 31. He thanked all the individuals who worked with Lucy Nakyobe and Adonia Ayebare to deliver the success of the summits. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum to ensure that Uganda delivers not only good summits but also good content to the world during his tenure.
At the luncheon, President Museveni reiterated that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government has achieved success in many undertakings, including the recent international summits. He attributed this success to NRM’s core practices, which include vision, ideology, patriotism, and prioritization. Additionally, he highlighted the government’s versatility, which has attracted investors and empowered government entities, leading to a diversified economy and reduced cost of state operations.
President Museveni, as the new chairperson of NAM and G77+ China countries, outlined four main focus points of his reign, including working for peace in the world, promoting South-to-South investments through the production of goods and services, opening up market linkages between countries, and improving investment in infrastructure.
In January 2024, President Museveni assumed two international offices as the chairperson of the NAM summit for the next three years and the head of the G77+China countries for a period of one year.
President Museveni also mentioned specific individuals and groups who contributed to the success of the summits, such as Sudhir Ruparelia and the Engineering Brigade of UPDF. He highlighted how their contributions and the rejection of Idi Amin’s ideological bankruptcy played a significant role in the success of the recent international summits.
The President’s appreciation for the organizing committee and their accomplishments reflects his confidence in the capabilities of Ugandan officials and the government to host and lead international events successfully. His vision for his tenure as the chairperson of NAM and G77+ China countries demonstrates a commitment to global peace, economic development, and infrastructure investment.
