President Museveni and First Lady Janet arrived at the celebrations venue for the 38th NRM victory day anniversary. The president emphasized the importance of achievements made in economic activities, external trade, regional integration and development, boosting tourism revenue, job creation, sustainable energy development, industrialization, and strengthening security in his speech on the eve of the anniversary.

As the national chairman of NRM and president of Uganda, Gen Museveni said that the NRM’s victory on January 26, 1986, was an indicator of the resilience of Ugandans and their ability to overcome various challenges. He further stated, “We have the capacity to do everything; there is nothing we cannot do. It is just a question of patriotism.”

President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni joined members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), government officials, and Ugandans for the 38th NRM victory day anniversary celebrations at St John’s SS Wakitaka playgrounds in Jinja city on January 26, 2024. Under the day’s theme “Building a country we all cherish,” the president called upon the police to conduct thorough investigations into corruption cases highlighted in the Auditor General’s reports.

Moreover, he expressed preference for the approach of conducting extensive inquiries by parliamentary committees, arguing that the police’s investigative arms should take precedence to avoid prolonged discussions in boardrooms and save government resources. President Museveni stressed that corruption reflects political failure and should be dismantled through legal means rather than relying on ineffective systems and methods. He described the theft of public funds as criminal behavior deserving prosecution procedures.

He urged all responsible government agencies to be vigilant and warned big powers which bully small nations to be cautious with Uganda under NRM rule. He also promised to expose the culprits in the future as he claimed that the opposition is being used by certain Western countries to undermine Uganda’s economy based on intelligence reports.

Museveni praised the people of Busoga for their participation in the struggles to liberate Uganda from bad governance and urged them to join him in the struggle against people sabotaging the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program. He also announced government plans to work on major roads in the sub-region, including the Jinja bridge-Budondo-Butagaya-Matumu road, Kamuli to Bukungu, and Iganga through Luuka to Kamuli and Kaliro.

The 38th NRM victory day anniversary celebrations were concluded with President Museveni acknowledging the support and participation of the people of Busoga and urging them to join him in tackling various national issues. He also reassured the people of Uganda that their capacity to overcome challenges and achieve greatness is unquestionable if they act with patriotism. Through his speech, President Museveni highlighted the progress made by Uganda under the NRM rule and the need for continuous efforts towards the development and prosperity of the nation.
