One person died while another is in critical condition after participating in a drinking challenge in the Kirinda zone of Busabala, Makindye Division. The deceased, identified only as Kigundu, and his colleague Nsereko consumed jugs of a mixture of coffee spirit waragi and another local brew known as Tolero at Julie’s Bar over the weekend. They were known for their heavy drinking habits and were competing to see who could consume the most alcohol.

According to witnesses, everything seemed normal until the two men had consumed four jugs of alcohol. They then collapsed and began to release foam from their mouths and noses. Residents contacted Kibuye police, who rushed them to Kiruddu hospital. Unfortunately, Kigundu passed away upon arrival, while Nsereko remains in critical condition.

Police are currently investigating whether the alcohol was laced with poison or if it was a result of negligence on the part of the victims. Kampala metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, stated, “Our officers have started investigations to determine if the mixture was laced with poison. But all we know is that this could have happened as a result of negligence from these victims.” The police have cautioned the public to avoid engaging in such negligent behavior and to be careful with locally distilled alcohol drinks.

In response to the continued deaths attributed to excessive alcohol consumption, Tororo Woman MP Sarah Opendi introduced the Alcohol Drinks Control Bill 2023. This bill aims to regulate the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol in Uganda. It proposes restrictions such as alcohol only being sold between 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm on weekends and not after midnight.

The tragic incident in Kirinda serves as a reminder of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and the importance of responsible drinking. It highlights the need for increased awareness and regulation of alcohol consumption to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and moderation when consuming alcohol.
