The family of Ahmad Mukasa Nsanja, a 30-year-old man from Luwero, is in desperate need of financial assistance. Ahmad had gone to Cairo, Egypt in 2019 and had reportedly secured a scholarship to study at Alazhar University. However, on December 27, 2023, Ahmad lost contact with his family and friends, prompting them to begin searching for him.
They later received devastating news from the Ugandan Embassy in Egypt that Ahmad had been killed in the First Settlement police station cells. He had been arrested for not having a visa at the time, despite having a valid visa in his possession. The embassy informed the family that Ahmad was allegedly beaten to death while in police custody and that they would need 15 million Ugandan Shillings to transport his remains back home.
The family has reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for help in pursuing justice and bringing Ahmad’s remains back to Uganda. They have only managed to raise 3 million out of the required 15 million and are struggling to come up with the remaining funds. Ahmad’s mother, Nusurah Nalwoga, is heartbroken and in pain over the loss of her son, while his brother, Hussein Kato Sebwato, is still reeling from the shock. Sebwato, who had warned Ahmad about the ongoing operations to arrest foreigners without visas, narrowly escaped a similar fate in Egypt in 2020.
In a letter dated January 5, 2024, the district prosecutor ordered an investigation into two suspects and a postmortem on Ahmad’s body. He also instructed the police to inform the Ugandan embassy and the family about the death of Ahmad. The case is currently under investigation with file number 247/2024.
The family is appealing for financial assistance to bring Ahmad’s remains back home and to seek justice for his untimely death. They are reaching out to the public for support during this difficult time.
