Dog Kanyanya, the notorious ringleader of the Kisenyi criminal gang, has tragically succumbed to the bullet wounds he sustained during a police operation last Friday. The incident took place in the School View Zone located in Kisenyi II Parish in Kampala Central, Uganda.

The events leading to Kanyanya’s demise began when the police received reports of pedestrians being attacked by a gang of over 12 members armed with knives and iron bars. Responding to the situation, the police from Owino Market, which is situated opposite Kisenyi Centre, arrived at the scene and fired five shots in the air in an attempt to scare off the gang.

Despite the warning shots, Kanyanya attempted to stab a police officer, which prompted his colleague to shoot him in the legs in defense. By the time the police were able to respond, Kanyanya’s gang had already perpetrated numerous robberies, targeting at least 20 individuals and stealing their belongings, including wallets, money, watches, mobile phones, and other valuables.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, confirmed the news of Kanyanya’s demise and provided details of the incident. He stated, “He was shot trying to fight our officers. The group was armed with knives and iron bars.” It was also reported that Kanyanya’s gang had no specific time for carrying out criminal activities, making it dangerous for residents and individuals passing through the area.

The locals, like Joe Mukasa, have repeatedly fallen victim to this criminal group, expressing their fear and helplessness in dealing with the situation. Mukasa, who operates an electronics business, emphasized the unpredictable nature of the gang’s activities, leading to robberies even in broad daylight. Moreover, the gangs, which usually operate in groups of 10 to 20, are known as Eggaali.

Despite Kanyanya’s demise, the police are actively pursuing his remaining gang members who fled after the shooting. Owoyesigyire reiterated the police’s commitment to apprehending these criminals, stating, “These thugs rob whoever they come across. We are searching for other group members. We believe the operations will reduce. In the last week, there has been a surge of crime incidents.”

The tragic event has shed light on the rampant criminal activities in the area and the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect the residents and passersby. The loss of Kanyanya serves as a grim reminder of the challenges posed by criminal gangs in urban areas, emphasizing the importance of concerted efforts by law enforcement and the community to address these issues.

In conclusion, the demise of Dog Kanyanya, although a significant development, underscores the ongoing threat posed by criminal gangs. The authorities and the local community must work together to ensure the safety and security of all individuals in the affected areas.
