Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has taken a significant step forward in its smart city initiative by deploying the city’s first-ever smart pole street lights. A total of 87 solar-powered lights, anchored on telecom infrastructure, have been strategically placed around various locations in the city.

This initiative is the result of a partnership between KCCA and the American Tower Corporation (ATC), aiming to modernize and enhance Kampala’s urban environment. The deployment includes 33 lights along Kololo Hill Drive, 30 along Nile Avenue, and 18 along Nkrumah Road, along with grid-powered floodlights in several other locations.

Minsa Kabanda, minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, expressed that the integration of solar-powered streetlights with telecommunication infrastructure aligns with the government’s vision for a modern and sustainable city. This partnership with ATC Uganda marks a significant step towards enhancing the city’s infrastructure and providing reliable services to its citizens.

Dorothy Kisaka, KCCA executive director, emphasized that the Smart City Initiative represents a strategic commitment to building an integrated, efficient, and sustainable urban environment in Kampala. She also highlighted the need for more streetlights in the city, pointing out that out of the required 40,000 lights, only 6,000 have been installed, with 75% currently functional.

The smart poles, also serving as outdoor distributed antenna systems, are being installed in densely populated areas to enhance telecommunication infrastructure and integrate solar-powered street lighting, contributing to the city’s illumination and safety. ATC Uganda’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility is evident in its deployment of solar-powered streetlights, promoting eco-friendly solutions and supporting the global drive towards net-zero emissions.

Overall, the partnership between KCCA and ATC Uganda signifies a significant advancement in the city’s infrastructure, opening up the night economy, enhancing safety on the streets, and transforming the way the city operates for a brighter future.
