Baziro Songok, a police officer attached to Nakiloro Anti-Stock Theft Unit detach in Moroto district, tragically lost his life after being shot dead by a suspected Karimojong warrior. The incident occurred on a Friday evening around 8:15 pm as Songok, accompanied by two teenagers, Tamuhid Chemonges (18 years old) and Wadudu Mwanga (15 years old), residents of Nakiloro, were making their way back to the barracks from Nakiloro trading center.

The suspected shooter, identified only as Apule and a resident of Nakiloro village, crossed paths with the trio as he was also heading home. Armed and seemingly hostile, Apule ordered Songok and the teenagers to move towards the nearby bush before firing the fatal shot. Despite the dire situation, Chemonges and Mwanga displayed remarkable courage and managed to restrain the warrior, disarming him in the process.

Following the tragic event, a joint operation by the Nakiloro detachment of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit and the UPDF was launched to track down the suspect. During the course of this operation, Apule was found deceased in the bush the following day. It is believed that the warrior may have succumbed to injuries sustained during the scuffle with Songok and the teenagers.

Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional police spokesperson, provided further details on the sequence of events leading to Songok’s unfortunate demise. He explained that a team of ASTU and UPDF personnel, led by the officer in charge of Nakiloro, conducted a thorough search for Songok after the shooting. Upon locating him, it was discovered that Songok had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was promptly rushed to the UPDF health facility at 3rd Div. headquarters for urgent medical attention. Tragically, Songok was pronounced dead upon arrival at the medical facility.

The loss of Baziro Songok has sent shockwaves through the community and law enforcement agencies in Moroto district. His dedication to serving and protecting the people as a police officer will be remembered and celebrated by those who knew him. The bravery displayed by Chemonges and Mwanga in the face of danger serves as a testament to the resilience and courage of the human spirit.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident, authorities are committed to ensuring that justice is served for the late Baziro Songok. The joint efforts of the security forces in apprehending the suspect, Apule, and uncovering the truth behind the tragic events underscore the importance of collaboration and swift action in maintaining law and order in the region.
