Four officers from Kabalagala police station have been arrested on suspicion of robbing $30,000 (about Shs 114 million) from a Kenyan businessman, Muhammad Olad Abdirahman. The arrested officers are Phiona Among, Isaac Angula, Shafik Baluku, and Bernard Galenda.

The incident began when Muhammad and two others sought the help of the manager of Royal View Hotel Buziga to find the best exchange rate for their $30,000 cash. The hotel manager tipped off one officer, who then alerted three others. Together with an individual named Okello, who pretended to be a foreign exchange broker, the officers conspired to arrest the victims. The victims were then taken to Kabalagala barracks road and eventually to another hotel garden, where the officers allegedly robbed them of the money before releasing them.

Following their ordeal, the victims reported the case to the criminal investigations directorate (CID), leading to the arrest of the four officers. Searches at the officers’ homes led to the recovery of some dollars and other exhibits. Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, stated that the officers will face dismissal from the force and will be charged with aggravated robbery in the courts of law.

The search is ongoing for the hotel manager and the individual known as Okelo. It is worth noting that the annual crime report of 2022 highlighted a total of 443 cases of aggravated robbery of cash reported to the police, indicating a 1.6 per cent increase compared to 2021. This incident serves as a reminder of the prevalence of robbery and the importance of effective law enforcement in addressing such crimes.
