Yusuf Nyanzi and Hussein Sserubula have been at the center of a high-profile murder case involving the attempted murder of Gen Katumba Wamala in June 2021. After a long legal battle, Yusuf Nyanzi was finally acquitted by the High Court, marking a significant turn in the case.

Nyanzi, who has been in and out of Luzira prison for eight years, is no stranger to the legal system. He faces three separate high-profile murder cases, including the murder of Maj Muhammad Kiggundu and his bodyguard Sgt Steven Mukasa, as well as the murder of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi. Despite being granted bail in some of these cases, Nyanzi has been a key figure in ongoing legal battles.

Alongside Nyanzi, Hussein Sserubula was also set free by the court after it found insufficient evidence to incriminate them in the charges of terrorism and the murder of Katumba’s daughter Brenda Nantongo Wamala, and his driver Haruna Kayondo, as well as the attempted murder of Katumba himself. The ruling was delivered by Justice Alice Komuhangi, with registrar Juliet Harty Hatanga relaying the decision.

While Nyanzi and Sserubula found relief in their acquittal, six other accused persons were not as fortunate. Muhammad Kagugube, Sirimani Kisambira, Abdullah Aziz Ramadhan, Dunka, Kamada Walusimbi, Habib Ramadhan Marjan, and Huzaifah Wampa have had charges of murder, attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated robbery, and affiliation with a terrorist organization confirmed against them. These charges stem from various murders and robberies within the Kampala Metropolitan area.

The incidents leading to these charges have been detailed in court proceedings. The tragic deaths of Katumba’s daughter Nantongo and his driver, Sgt Kayondo, on June 1, 2021, along Kisota road in Kisaasi, sparked the legal action against the accused. Additionally, the suspects have been implicated in other murders and robberies, including incidents at Cheap General Hardware in Nansana and City Shoppers Supermarket in Kanyanya.

Furthermore, the accused have been linked to criminal activities dating back to 2015, involving financial support for acts of terrorism in Uganda and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Incriminating evidence, including weapons and materials related to the crimes, was found during searches of the accused persons’ homes.

The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has announced its readiness to prosecute the remaining six suspects, who have been committed to face trial before a panel of three judges of the International Crimes Division. As the legal proceedings continue, the case has shed light on the complex web of criminal activities and the pursuit of justice for the victims of these heinous crimes.
