The High court has sentenced four people to serve eight years in jail for plotting to kill former Inspector General of Police Edward Kale Kayihura and Namayingo district police commander Maj Francis Okumu. Sadam Okuku Umalu, Colline Osinya, Joseph Ojambo, and Abudala Lwanga were sentenced on Friday by justice Dr Andrew Bashaija following a plea bargain agreement between the suspects and chief state attorney Joseph Kyomuhendo.

According to the court proceedings, between May and June 2016, the convicts stole two AK-47 rifles with 60 rounds of live ammunition from Nakudi police post in Namayingo district. A gunshot was heard at a resident’s home in Sirowa Village in Namayingo, leading to a police operation that resulted in the arrest of Okuku and his accomplices.

During interrogation, the suspects confessed to stealing the guns with the intention of robbing people and carrying out targeted killings of individuals who were allegedly disturbing the Muslim community of the Tabliq sect or impeding their mission. This included the former IGP Kale Kayihura, DPC Okumu, and the RDC. They also admitted to stealing a gun from a policeman in 2015 and using it in various failed and successful robbery attempts.

The judge approved their plea bargain agreement and sentenced the accused individuals to eight years on each count to run concurrently. The sentencing serves as a warning and consequence for those who engage in criminal activities such as planning and carrying out acts of violence.

It is essential for justice to be served in cases of attempted murder and conspiracy, especially when the targets are individuals in positions of authority. The court’s decision sends a message that such actions will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face the legal consequences of their actions.

In conclusion, the sentencing of the four individuals for plotting to kill former IGP Kale Kayihura and Namayingo district police commander Maj Francis Okumu highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of all individuals, regardless of their position or status. The justice system plays a crucial role in maintaining order and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
