The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has been instructed by Parliament to refrain from making funeral arrangements for the late Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal. Ogwal, 77, a member of FDC, passed away in a hospital in India after a brief illness. The FDC had released a tentative funeral program covering seven days, starting with gatherings at her home in Bugolobi, followed by events in Adok in Dokolo and Alito in Kole district upon the arrival of her body in Entebbe.
The FDC’s program also included a postmortem at Mulago hospital, a funeral service at All Saints Cathedral in Kampala, a parliamentary tribute, and services in Lira city and Kole district. However, Parliament’s director of communication and public affairs, Chris Obore, criticized the FDC for releasing the program prematurely, emphasizing that the responsibility for Ogwal’s burial lies with Parliament.
According to the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, Ogwal’s body will arrive in the country on Sunday and will be taken to Mulago hospital and then A-Plus Funeral home. A special sitting will be held at parliament on Monday, and Ogwal is scheduled to be buried the following Saturday. Ogwal had been a member of FDC since 2011 and was involved in various parliamentary committees overseeing policy matters related to infrastructure and budget.
The late Ogwal joins the ranks of three other serving MPs who have passed away in recent times. These include Bishop Patrick Okabe, Jacob Oulanyah, and Charles Okello Macodwogo Engola. The FDC’s proposed funeral arrangements have been discredited by Parliament, as the speaker, in conjunction with the family, will release the official funeral arrangements. The FDC has been urged to show respect for the late Ogwal and not undermine the dignity of her final journey.
