Yoweri Kasozi, the director of Mentor High School, has found himself in legal trouble after being arrested by police in Kajjansi for allegedly confining his school cook, Daniel Euriana, for over 100 days in a store. The shocking incident has raised serious concerns about the treatment of employees and the abuse of power by employers.
The incident began when Kasozi accused Euriana of stealing five drums and four iron sheets on December 2, 2023. Instead of following the proper legal procedures, Kasozi took matters into his own hands and decided to punish Euriana by confining him in a store. In his statement to the police, Kasozi claimed that he was punishing Euriana for betraying the trust of his employer by stealing from him.
Euriana, who was promoted from a school guard to a cook by Kasozi, pleaded his innocence but was ignored. He reported being tortured and mistreated during his confinement, which lasted from December 2, 2023, to March 13, 2024. It was only when a whistleblower alerted the Kajjansi division police commander (DPC) that Euriana was finally rescued from his unlawful detention.
Upon investigation, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, confirmed that Euriana had been held against his will for approximately four months. Euriana, who is only 21 years old, expressed his distress at the physical and emotional trauma he endured during his confinement. He claimed that his cries for help went unheard, and he was denied the opportunity to contact his family.
The police have issued a warning to the public, emphasizing the importance of seeking proper legal intervention when dealing with suspected criminal activities instead of taking matters into their own hands. Kasozi now faces charges of unlawful confinement for his actions against Euriana.
This disturbing incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their status or position. Employers must adhere to the law and handle disputes or allegations in a lawful and humane manner. It is imperative to prioritize the well-being and safety of employees and ensure that they are treated with respect and fairness in the workplace.
As the case unfolds, it highlights the need for accountability and justice to be served in cases of abuse of power and violations of human rights. The authorities must conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that Kasozi is held accountable for his actions. It is crucial to send a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated in society.
In conclusion, the case of Yoweri Kasozi and Daniel Euriana sheds light on the importance of upholding ethical standards and legal protocols in all aspects of life. It serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of disregarding the rights and well-being of others. As the legal process unfolds, justice must prevail to ensure that those responsible for such heinous acts are held accountable for their actions.
