With just a week left before the start of the new school term, Brother Augustine Mugabo has made an early retirement as head teacher of St Henry’s College, Kitovu (SHACK). After serving in the position for 12 years, Bro Martin Wanambwa has taken over as the new head teacher, assuming office on Friday.

Bro Mugabo confirmed his departure from SHACK on medical grounds when reached for comment on Saturday. He stated that although his early retirement is due to medical reasons, it is not a cause for alarm. He expressed his intention to focus on less stressful tasks as advised by doctors and said he is pleased to leave the College in the hands of a capable team.

Bro Wanambwa, who previously served as Bro Mugabo’s deputy in charge of administration for four years, has succeeded him as the head teacher. Following his retirement, Bro Mugabo aims to concentrate on education consultancy and plans to utilize his PhD knowledge to mentor colleagues at Lammnais Brothers Community in Makerere, Kampala.

Peter Ateenyi, the spokesperson of St Henry’s College Kitovu Old Boys Association (SHACKOBA), praised Bro Mugabo’s dedicated efforts during his tenure to develop the College. He also highlighted Bro Mugabo’s commitment to contributing to the completion of the SHACK education centre project as his first role in retirement.

Bro Mugabo, who is approaching his 50th birthday, started at SHACK in 2003 as a trainee teacher and ascended through the ranks to become the head teacher in 2012, having also served as an estates manager. He is recognized for leading the construction of a modern, fully equipped science lab and enhancing the overall infrastructure at the College.

Established by the Catholic missionary congregation of White Fathers in 1922, St. Henry’s College is a boys-only boarding government-aided secondary school. In 1927, the school was handed over to the Brothers of Christian Instruction based at Kisubi in Entebbe, who manage multiple Catholic-founded schools across Uganda.

Bro Mugabo’s tenure has seen the College regain its reputation and success in sports, with some former students pursuing professional football careers.
