The leader of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Mr Patrick Amuriat Oboi, paid tribute to the late Dokolo Woman Member of Parliament, Barbara Cecilia Atim Ogwal, by emphasizing her role as a champion for multiparty democracy. He also highlighted the contribution of other strong political figures in Lango who supported her in this journey, including the late honourable Yefusa Okullo Epak, honourable Daniel Omara Atubo, and honourable Ben Wacha.

Describing Ogwal as a political activist, Mr Amuriat emphasized her role in forming a pressure group known as Lira Boys and refuted claims that she was a political thief, underscoring her commitment to political activism. These sentiments were echoed by Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo, who praised Ogwal’s strong convictions and her readiness to abandon positions that she believed were not right.

The leader made these remarks while addressing mourners at the burial of Cecilia Ogwal in Dog-Gudu Village, Alito sub-county in Kole District. The funeral was attended by thousands of mourners from all walks of life, with Vice President Jessica Alupo serving as the chief mourner and accompanied by other top government officials.

Notable figures, including the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya, Hon Gladys Boss Shollei, and other dignitaries from Kenya and other African states, also attended the ceremony to pay their respects. Each individual highlighted different aspects of Ogwal’s legacy, including her role as a peacemaker, defender of human rights, and advocate for schoolgirls in the Lango sub-region.

Others, such as Deputy Speaker Mr Thomas Tayebwa, praised Ogwal’s leadership and mentorship, emphasizing the importance of learning from her example even in her absence. Calls were made for the construction of a school in Alito in honor of Ogwal’s dedicated service to the country, reflecting the impact she had in her community. Overall, the outpouring of tributes and reflections on her contributions emphasized the influential role Cecilia Ogwal played as a dedicated political leader and advocate for democracy.
