The streets of Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, witnessed chaos and violence on Saturday as supporters of the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were attacked by suspected armed supporters aligned with the ruling Malawi Congress Party. The incident resulted in injuries to around 25 DPP supporters, who were subsequently taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital for treatment. Additionally, more than 10 cars belonging to DPP supporters were vandalized, with some even having their tires stolen.
The street parade organized by the DPP was intended to raise awareness about the upcoming 2025 election and the importance of obtaining national identification. However, the event took a violent turn when a truck unloaded masked men wielding machetes and other weapons near a gas station where the DPP supporters had gathered. Levi Luwemba, the deputy national director for operations at the DPP, condemned the violence and pointed fingers at President Lazarus Chakwera’s party for orchestrating the attack. Luwemba emphasized the importance of upholding democracy and warned against attempts to sow chaos and impose dictatorship in the country. This incident comes amidst escalating tensions as Malawi gears up for the upcoming elections in 2025.

Ching’oma refrained from elaborating further and stated that the party would issue a formal statement addressing the incident.
