Police in Maracha district have arrested a 19-year-old man, Habibu Apiku, for allegedly defiling a five-year-old girl. The suspect, a resident of Kololo West village, Vurra Parish in Tara sub-county, is said to have taken advantage of the absence of the minor’s parents and lured her to his house last Friday before committing the crime and fleeing to an unknown place.
The matter was brought to light on Saturday when the parents noticed blood oozing out of the girl’s private parts. Residents, upon hearing about the incident, conducted a search for Apiku, and he was found hiding in Kololo trading center on Monday. The suspect narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob before the police from Tara Police post intervened and arrested him.
Dante Obia, a resident, described the incident as unfortunate and inhumane, attributing the vice to moral degeneration and drug abuse among the youth in the district. According to police, the suspect has been charged with aggravated defilement. Records from Tara police post indicate that at least three defilement cases have been registered from July 2023 to date.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of minors in the area and has sparked discussions about the need for more proactive measures to protect vulnerable children. This disturbing case serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and the urgent need to address the root causes of such heinous crimes within the community.
