UCI discharges second bone marrow transplant patient

The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) has achieved another major milestone in the advancement of cancer care in the country following the successful treatment and discharge of its second bone marrow transplant patient.

Mr David Bongomin Awany, a 56-year-old businessman originally from Nwoya District and now based in Gulu City, underwent the autologous stem cell transplant to treat multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that builds up in the bone marrow and crowds out healthy cells, according to UCI doctors.
