In an effort to expedite the commitment to end the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the new United States Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, will be embarking on a tour of Africa and the Middle East from March 11-23. The Joe Biden administration is keen on addressing the immediate and dire humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people, as well as charting a path towards a civilian, democratic government.

During his tour, Perriello will be engaging in discussions with a wide range of Sudanese civilians, including members of civil society, Resistance Committees, Emergency Response Room members, women, youth, and other grassroots organizations and parties. The aim is to gather perspectives on how to strengthen efforts to respond to urgent needs, advocate for an end to the conflict, and prepare for a democratic transition in Sudan.

The US Department of State mentioned that the Special Envoy will also be meeting with key African, regional, and multilateral partners to coordinate efforts towards bringing an end to the devastating conflict in Sudan. Perriello’s appointment by US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken last month highlights the administration’s dedication to addressing the crisis in Sudan, including halting hostilities, ensuring unhindered humanitarian access, and supporting the Sudanese people’s desire for freedom, peace, and justice.

Prior to this role, Perriello has held positions such as the US Special Envoy for the Great Lakes and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Special Representative for the second Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, and as a US Congressman representing Virginia. Blinken emphasized in the statement that Perriello’s appointment signifies Washington’s commitment to engaging with Sudan to tackle the ongoing crisis and create a peaceful and democratic future for the Sudanese people.

The tour will take Perriello to various important locations including Kampala, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, and Cairo, where he will interact with different stakeholders in Sudan to gather insights and perspectives on how to move forward in resolving the conflict. By meeting with a diverse group of individuals, Perriello hopes to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation on the ground and work towards sustainable solutions.

In conclusion, the visit of the US Special Envoy for Sudan signifies a renewed commitment by the Biden administration to address the crisis in Sudan and work towards a peaceful and democratic future for the Sudanese people. By engaging with various stakeholders and partners, Perriello aims to contribute to finding lasting solutions to the conflict and meeting the urgent humanitarian needs of the people of Sudan.
