March 13, 2024 saw a significant meeting take place in Addis Ababa between the Coordination of Civilian Democratic Forces (Taqaddum) and the new US Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello. The focus of the meeting was on the importance of including civilian voices in the ongoing efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Sudan.
At present, peace talks facilitated by the US and Saudi Arabia, known as the Jeddah process, only involve the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. Similarly, the IGAD initiative has outlined a two-phase approach that prioritizes military arrangements before considering civilian participation.
Taqaddum came prepared with their own roadmap for peace, which stressed the necessity of a collective international effort that actively involves civilian stakeholders in the negotiation process. They also put forth the suggestion to exclude the dissolved National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement, and their associated groups due to their historical involvement in destabilizing activities.
In a statement released by Taqaddum, it was mentioned that Perriello expressed unwavering support for the Sudanese people’s yearning for peace. He attentively listened to their suggestions on how to bring an end to the war, establish lasting peace, and reinstate a democratic, civilian-led government.
Perriello urged all involved parties to strive for an immediate ceasefire, address the pressing humanitarian crisis, and engage in sincere efforts to establish a democratic, civilian-led government that reflects the desires of the Sudanese populace.
The meeting in Addis Ababa marked a significant step forward in the quest for peace in Sudan. By emphasizing the inclusion of civilian voices in the negotiation process, both Taqaddum and the US Special Envoy highlighted the importance of ensuring that the outcome of the peace talks truly reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
Moving forward, it will be crucial for all parties involved to continue working together towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan. By prioritizing the needs and wishes of civilians, there is hope that a sustainable peace agreement can be reached, paving the way for a democratic and civilian-led government to be established in the country. The commitment shown by Taqaddum and the US Special Envoy serves as a beacon of hope for the people of Sudan as they strive for a brighter and more peaceful future.
