On March 21, 2024, the United States announced a significant humanitarian assistance package totaling over $47 million for the emergency response in Sudan, Chad, and South Sudan. Assistant Secretary for Population, Refugees, and Migration, Julieta Valls Noyes, representing the U.S., met with Chadian Prime Minister Succès Masra to discuss the aid, as reported by the State Department.

Sudan is currently facing the largest humanitarian crisis globally, with more than 8 million people displaced since the conflict began in April, and nearly 25 million people in need of assistance, according to the United Nations. This crisis has led to over one million Sudanese refugees fleeing to neighboring countries such as Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.

The U.S. humanitarian assistance will provide crucial life-saving support, including food, water, sanitation facilities, shelter, medical services, mental health support, and protection to those affected by the conflict in Sudan. The announcement also highlights the ongoing commitment of the United States to providing aid to Sudan and neighboring countries, with total assistance surpassing $968 million since FY 2023.

In partnership with international and local organizations, the U.S. remains dedicated to supporting millions of people impacted by the devastating conflict in Sudan. As the leading donor for the Sudan emergency response, the U.S. urges the international community to assist in alleviating the suffering of over one million refugees who have been forced to flee due to violence.

The U.S. calls on all parties involved in Sudan’s conflict to allow unrestricted humanitarian access, both cross-line and cross-border, engage in direct negotiations, agree to a ceasefire, and halt hostilities immediately. The State Department emphasized the critical need for a ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access to prevent a famine and long-term catastrophe in the region.

In conclusion, the U.S. remains committed to providing vital aid to those affected by the crisis in Sudan and neighboring countries. The call for cooperation and support from the international community underscores the urgency of addressing the humanitarian needs of millions of displaced individuals. Together, through collaborative efforts, progress can be made towards mitigating the impact of the conflict and providing essential assistance to those most in need.
