Veteran football administrator Twaha Mbarak has officially announced his intention to run for the presidency of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). In a statement, Mbarak, 53, expressed his belief that he is the best candidate for Kenyan football and pledged to collaborate with various stakeholders to promote the growth of the game, from the grassroots to the national level.

Mbarak emphasized that his leadership would prioritize talent identification and the development of local talent with the aim of improving the performance of the national team. He also promised to bring in new technical personnel to help restore the lost glory at the national team level.

Mbarak’s extensive experience in football administration includes serving as the Vice Chairman of the defunct Kenya Football Federation from 2010 to 2011 under the leadership of Sam Nyamweya. He was part of the football delegation that sued Fifa at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Zurich over the eligibility of Football Kenya Limited. This legal action led to the disbandment of both KFF and FKL, culminating in the formation of the FKF in 2011.

The FKF elections are scheduled for October of this year, with the Annual General Meeting set for March 16 in Nairobi. Mbarak, who is also the Chairman of Bandari, expressed his commitment to attend the meeting and called for a joint election with the County Football Associations, emphasizing the importance of compliance with the Sports Act.

Additionally, Mbarak stressed his intentions to prioritize transparency, accountability, and the sourcing of sponsorship for the local league. He aims to secure sponsorship from the Premier League to the lower county leagues and obtain the support of all 47 county governments. This, he believes, will contribute to the development of grassroots football through the improvement of infrastructure, the marketing of the league, and the overall competitiveness of the teams.
