The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, made an unexpected visit on Tuesday afternoon to the Djebel Jelloud railway depot and the Tunis Marine station, where he inspected the state and maintenance conditions of the means of transport.

The Head of State emphasized the need to put an end to the corruption that plagues the public transport service, as indicated in a statement from the presidency of the Republic.

While citizens struggle to find a means of transport to move around in inhumane conditions, the trains’ locomotives, abandoned in the depots, have turned into a pile of iron ruins, he lamented.

According to the statement, President Saïed discussed several corruption cases that the transport sector has been facing for decades.

This includes the metro lines that were built in the streets Jean Jaurès and Louis Braille in Tunis before being buried, causing losses amounting to thousands of billions as well as the acquisition of subway locomotives that are not compatible with the installed rails.

It is worth noting that the Head of State decided on Tuesday to dismiss the Minister of Transport, Rabie Majidi.
