Two agreements related to the launch of two new technical cooperation projects in the areas of productivity improvement and low-carbon energy were signed yesterday by the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, STEG, and JICA.

According to a statement released yesterday by JICA, the two projects will be implemented by mid-2024.

The first agreement concerns the project for quality improvement and productivity enhancement “Kaizen” and the promotion of business development services (phase III). This will allow the continuation of building on the achievements of previous phases of the project, especially by expanding the dissemination of the Kaizen concept to new sectors and geographic areas in Tunisia.

It also aims to strengthen Tunisia’s position as a center of excellence for the dissemination of Kaizen in Africa, particularly in francophone Africa. The project will also support institutional efforts to disseminate the Kaizen concept in Tunisia.

As for the second agreement, it focuses on the project for low-carbon and stable supply of electricity in Tunisia, particularly aiming to enhance the capacities of STEG engineers (STEG dispatching center) for managing the electrical grid. It foresees managing the supply and demand of electricity in the new context marked by an increasing integration of electricity from renewable sources into the Tunisian electrical grid.

With the signing of these agreements, JICA can now proceed to recruit a multidisciplinary team of Japanese experts for each of these two projects who will work with their Tunisian counterparts, providing them with technology transfer and Japan’s expertise to achieve the expected results.

“Technical support in the implementation of these two projects will include, in addition to the employment of Japanese experts, conducting training in Tunisia and Japan in the specific areas of each project, as well as providing necessary equipment and software to facilitate the implementation of planned activities and achieve the desired results,” the same source pointed out.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, the Ambassador of Japan to Tunisia, Osuga Takeshi, the Resident Representative of JICA in Tunisia, Miyata Mayumi, the Director General of Electricity and Energy Transition, Belhassen Chiboub, and the Deputy General Manager of STEG, Nejib Chtourou.
