The President of the Republic, Kais Saïed, supervised, on Wednesday, at the Carthage Palace, a meeting dedicated to the examination of the Aghlabid Medical City project in the governorate of Kairouan.
During the meeting, the Head of State mentioned the difficulties and obstacles that have hindered the launch of this mega-project since 2020, as stated in the statement from the Presidency of the Republic.
“Some spheres continue to maneuver with internal and external parties so that the construction work on this project is not initiated,” the statement adds.
The meeting also discussed the future legal status of the Aghlabid Medical City and the choice of the most flexible, effective, and rapid legal framework to adopt in order to catch up on the delayed progress.
The ways to mobilize both domestic and foreign funding for a project of national importance were also addressed.
The Head of State also reminded that health, as a human constitutional right, enshrined in laws and international conventions, cannot remain on paper.
In this regard, he mentioned the progressive decay of the public health system since the adoption of what is commonly referred to as the structural reform program, initiated in the late 80s, noting that many hospitals are facing shortages of the most basic supplies, even though the medical and paramedical staff working there are among the best qualified globally.
“Not opposed to international cooperation in the health sector, Tunisia must, however, consider solutions to convince the best professionals to stay in the country and to encourage them to work more in the interior regions,” emphasized Saïed.
In the same context, the Head of State pointed out that “hundreds of the best professionals in the health sector and other fields leave Tunisia due to the lack of appropriate working conditions.”
And to conclude: “If we compare these increasing waves of brain drain to the loans contracted from abroad by Tunisia, our country undeniably loses out.”
