President Museveni recently came to the defense of Speaker Anita Among amidst intense public scrutiny following allegations of corruption implicating her in a multibillion scandal at Parliament. The Bukedea Woman MP and the Parliament she presides over have been under fire for alleged misuse of taxpayers’ money, with many calling on President Museveni to address the issue of uncontrolled expenditure.
During her visit to Bukedea District to update her particulars in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) register, Ms Among assured her supporters of President Museveni’s support. Despite calls for her resignation, she emphasized that she was working for the ordinary Ugandans who suffer from economic mismanagement in the country. She called on the people of Bukedea to pray for the President and the country, highlighting her commitment to serving her constituents.
President Museveni, in response to the criticism towards Speaker Among, shifted the focus to what he deemed as the real problem – traitors working for foreign interests. He emphasized the need to expose these individuals rather than targeting Members of Parliament like Ms Among. He commended her efforts in providing quality healthcare services to the people through initiatives like the Bukedea Teaching Hospital and College of Health Sciences.
Ms Among, in turn, expressed her gratitude to President Museveni for his support and guidance, vowing to remain committed to serving the country. She praised him for defending Uganda’s moral values, particularly by signing the anti-homosexuality law. Amidst accusations of corruption and scrutiny, she highlighted her role in the enactment of the Anti-Homosexuality Act as a defense against the allegations that surfaced on social media.
The Inspector General of Government (IGG) had initially shown interest in investigating the Parliament’s expenditure following public outcry, but later abandoned the pursuit after the Auditor General stepped in. The allegations against Speaker Among revolve around misuse of funds, irregular employee recruitment, and ghost staff, with reports of billions of shillings being allocated to her travel expenses and community outreaches.
Despite the controversies surrounding her, Ms Among remains steadfast in her defense, refusing to engage with rumors and hearsay. She abruptly shut down discussions on the matter during a recent plenary sitting, indicating a reluctance to address allegations cooked up on social media.
President Museveni’s unwavering support for Speaker Among underscores his belief in her commitment to serving the country. As the investigations into the corruption allegations continue, the spotlight remains on the Speaker and her handling of public funds, prompting calls for transparency and accountability in governance.
