Filmmaker Mati Diop made history at the Berlin Film Festival by winning the prestigious Golden Bear for Best Film for her work “Dahomey.” The film explores the journey of stolen artifacts taken by French colonial troops in 1892, as they are returned from Paris to the Republic of Benin and the impact of their repatriation.
In addition to Diop’s win, Nelson Carlos De Los Santos Arias was awarded Best Director for his film “Pepe,” while Sebastian Stan received the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance for his role in “A Different Man.” Emily Watson also took home a Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for her work in “Small Things Like These.”
Director Hong Sangsoo received the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize for his film “A Traveler’s Needs,” while French director and screenwriter Bruno Dumont won the Silver Bear Jury Prize for “L’Empire.”
The Berlinale this year featured Kenyan-Mexican actor Lupita Nyong’o as its first black jury president, alongside a panel that included actor-directors Brady Corbet and Jasmine Trinca, and directors Ann Hui, Christian Petzold, and Albert Serra, as well as Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko.
