A PASSAGE FROM A BOOK BY THE GERMAN PHILOSOPHER HANNAH ARENDT, PUBLISHED IN 1954, CAN SERVE AS A REMINDER IN THESE TIMES OF GREAT GENERAL CONFUSION WHERE DESPOTS DISGUISE THEMSELVES AS DEMOCRATS AND ALL KINDS OF TYRANNIES AIM TO REDUCE THE HUMAN BEING TO A SIMPLE OBJECT TO BE CRUSHED. READING:
“To fight totalitarianism, it is enough to understand this: It is the most absolute negation of freedom. Now this negation is the fact of all tyrannies and is not decisive for understanding the specific nature of the phenomenon. HOWEVER, IF SOMEONE CANNOT BE MOBILIZED WHEN FREEDOM IS THREATENED, IT IS BECAUSE NOTHING CAN MOBILIZE THEM. Even the “moral” point of view, the expression of a strong protest against unprecedented crimes in history […] cannot be of great help here.
