After his trip this weekend to Aného with his government, where a photo circulating on social media shows him smiling, demonstrating his talent as a young plant waterer, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Faure Gnassingbé is heading to Elévagnon, in the East-Mono, to launch the construction of culverts.

“In the framework of the construction of 21 bridges across the country (including 07 for our prefecture), a national launch is planned to be held in East-Mono (Ogou-Kolidė) by His Excellency Mr. Faure Essozimna GNASSINGBE, President of the Republic,” reads a statement issued by the prefect of East-Mono, Lieutenant Colonel BITENIWE Kouma.

As is usually the case during official visits of the head of state in the interior of the country, Lieutenant Colonel BITENIWE Kouma is determined to go all out to give a warm welcome to his “boss” in his territorial jurisdiction. And he spares no effort to impress, even mobilizing the entire prefecture to form an honor guard in honor of the prince.

In his statement, which borders on the ridiculous, this prefect known for RPT-UNIR activities, issues a strong call to all his fellow citizens to go to Elévagnon from 6 am on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 to animate the place before the arrival of Faure Gnassingbé. It seems that for him, the visit of the head of state should be the only priority of the day for his subjects.

“In order to give him an exceptional and dignified welcome, the Prefect of East-Mono, the mayors of the East-Mono 1, 2, and 3 communes call: all departmental and service heads in all sectors and their staff, women’s associations, youth organizations, artisans and all trades, traditional chieftaincy, religious confessions (Catholic, Protestant, and Muslim), folklore groups, artisans, and the entire population of the East-Mono prefecture to mobilize and go massively on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 in Ogou-Kolidė, boarding trucks parked in each canton’s capitals. Only strong and significant mobilization can ensure the success of this meeting with the Head of State who comes to offer us 07 large bridges, a symbol of the end of our multiple hardships in East-Mono.

NB: in order to make the task easier, residents of hamlets and farms are requested to use any other means of transportation to reach the cantonal capitals as soon as possible. An approach march could even be carried out from the day before to avoid delays. The set-up should be completed at 06:00 AM,” continues the famous statement.

What zeal! The excessive Togolese mentality. It is astonishing to note that in a country where unemployment is at its peak and poverty can be seen on people’s faces, the population is still being diverted from their daily activities to organize events in honor of the head of state.

More surprisingly, it is hearing this prefect say that these culverts are like a “gift” from Faure Gnassingbé. Shouldn’t it be his role to build infrastructure for the country? It is simply unacceptable to use such language to describe projects that should be a fundamental responsibility of any government.
