A PASSAGE FROM A BOOK BY THE GERMAN PHILOSOPHER HANNAH ARENDT, PUBLISHED IN 1954, CAN SERVE AS A REMINDER IN THESE TIMES OF GREAT GENERAL CONFUSION WHERE DESPOTS DISGUISE THEMSELVES AS DEMOCRATS AND TYRANNIES OF ALL KINDS TEND TO REDUCE THE HUMAN BEING TO A SIMPLE OBJECT TO BE CRUSHED. READING:
“To fight totalitarianism, it is enough to understand this: It is the most absolute negation of freedom. However, this negation is the fact of all tyrannies and is not decisive for understanding the specific nature of the phenomenon. NEVERTHELESS, IF SOMEONE CANNOT BE MOBILIZED WHEN FREEDOM IS THREATENED, THEN NOTHING CAN MOBILIZE HIM. Even the “moral” point of view, the expression of a strong protest against unprecedented crimes in history […] cannot be of much help here.
