We will probably finish the study in the commission of the new constitution today. And in the coming days, there will be a plenary adoption.
Article 144 states that constitutional revision can be done either by referendum or parliamentary means. So a new constitution adopted through parliamentary means would not be illegal, even if in practice, a new republic often comes about through a referendum. But our constitution does not mention this.
Today, all opposition deputies in the National Assembly total 14. If we subtract them from the 91 deputies, we are left with 77. It only takes 73 deputies to amend the constitution (4/5). It seems to me that despite our complaints and other actions, we are moving towards a new constitution.
Those who follow me here already know my opposition to this initiative, and I am waiting to know the final version of the text to give the official position of the Internet.
At this precise moment, we can only have regret. If only the opposition had 20 deputies in the National Assembly, this revision would not pass.
The opposition made the mistake of boycotting in 2000, and paid the price in 2002 with the removal of term limits. The boycott of 2018 produces the same results. Unfortunately.
But beware, I do not hold those who modify the constitution and those who boycotted the 2018 elections equally responsible, but when we know that the ultimate goal of politics is the conquest and preservation of power, there are mistakes that, when repeated, can be seen either as amateurism or collaboration.
For over 30 years, it’s the same cycle repeating itself in terms of political strategy.
Gerry Taama, devastated but alive.
